New Release From One of Napa’s Greatest Cabernet-Makers
Even though Benoit Touquette has earned eight 100-point scores, he’s still one of Napa’s great under-the-radar winemakers. For those of you who locked into bottles of his Teeter Totter Cabernet (our hottest Cabernet of last year), you know the depths of his profound talents. For those just tuning in, here’s your chance to find out. I’ve known Benoit since our paths crossed on a crushpad in 2011 and thanks to our relationship, he’s agreed to offer Wine Access clients a shot at today’s 2015 Teeter Totter Napa Cabernet Sauvignon ahead of everyone else. If you’re not on his private mailing list, this is the only place you’ll find this just-released full-bodied and opulent Cabernet. It quite easily drinks like a $100 Napa Cab, but at half the price — and that is the point. Benoit’s mission with Teeter is to keep prices grounded — offer a stunning package to lovers of sublime Napa Cabernet, made with his Midas touch, offered in a $49.99 bottle. Don’t miss out.
Those who know Benoit Touquette in passing might describe him as funny and disarming. But “Benny” — as some of his closest friends and co-workers call him, myself included — know that 100-point wines don’t happen by accident and are the result of a truly dedicated, very serious and passionate winemaker. Jeb Dunnuck, who left Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate last year to launch his own site, has kept up with his appointments. He hails Touquette as “unquestionably a rising superstar,” who practices “impeccable winemaking,” techniques — precise and pointed. 100-pointed.
When Benoit left Bordeaux for Napa Valley, he was prepared to work for greatness. He never missed a day of harvest. He put in long hours in the cellar. Most notably, he worked under Andy Erickson at Ovid and Screaming Eagle, and chose a stellar mentor in Michel Rolland, the world-famous consulting winemaker whose name is on 100-pointers by Harlan, Bond, and Araujo. Benoit and Rolland remain close to this day: can you read between the lines?
With Teeter Totter, Touquette doesn’t believe that a truly great Napa Cabernet Sauvignon has to cost $100 or more, and given his personal ties to some of the finest vineyards in the valley, he has made a wine that delivers on the vision he had when he founded the label. The 2015 Teeter Totter is a gorgeous Napa Cabernet — dark and dense, with big aromas of ripe black fruit, fantastic structure and balance. It is capable of long-aging, but will deliver a lot of pleasure today. I love this latest release and know you will too.
